ABOUT TUSTIN HAUNT

Our Goal:
The Tustin Haunt was founded as a community event to give residents a safe and fun place to enjoy their Halloween. We strive to continue this goal and improve upon the experience. Since 1995 our haunt has changed every year in order to "keep it fresh" so our patrons never have the same experience from year to year.
A haunted attraction of this caliber is often accompanied by a hefty admission cost, but the Tustin Haunt has been 100% FREE since day one. Our supporting companies help in ways they are capable of, but much of the financial burden is placed upon us. We ask for donations to help offset the cost, and any money that qualifies as a profit, is donated to local charities.
Our main goal is to give back to the community while having fun doing so.

Tustin Haunt History

This particular haunt actually originated in the city of Santa Ana in 1995. Ben, the creator of the haunt, came up with the idea and general layout after seeing another home haunt in his neighborhood. Ben improved upon their basic design by adding neat special effects, and a few surprises of his own. The first year started with a strobe light, and black plastic sheeting, but for the next several years, the "Haunted Hallway" attracted trick-or-treaters from several cities away.

Every year the Haunted Hallway increased in complexity, size, and scariness... until Ben moved to a location without the great space for the haunt. And so, the "Haunted Hallway" slumbered.

In 2001, an attempt to awaken the hallway was made at the "Tiller Trick-or-Treat" on Tustin High School's Campus. And though the "ToTs"(trick-or-Treaters) enjoyed the haunt immensly, the attempt was a disappointment to Ben and his crew who knew that they could have done much better had they been given more time. Again, the haunt slumbered.

In, 2003, the Haunt was revitalized with a fresh design concept and an awesome production crew, who started preparing for the Haunt especially early and had a wealth of spooky ideas to put to use. This was the year that the "Tustin Haunt" came to be known as it is today - due to the fact that the haunting took place in the city of Tustin. The haunt design was the brain child of the Ben, Jen, & Kevin. They took the haunt to the next level of fright with some new tricks and a layout that made good use of a 22'x42' plot of land. A graveyard, glow zone, hanging, and light tunnel were all part of the technical aspects of 2003's Tustin Haunt. The haunt was officially revived!

2004 proved to be an exciting Halloween! Something completely new that Ben, Jen, and Kevin were testing was the idea of a theme to the haunt. We decided to make the haunted house look like a haunted house. The Facade of an old shack, a long hallway, TV room,  Dining Room and many haunters made the haunt nice and scary. Please check out 2004's page for more on the aftermath of The Chainsaw Massacre .

In 2005 the Tustin Haunt continued with a themed haunt. Not quite as much of a story line as the previous year, but this allowed the haunt to be VERY scary. 2005's theme was Dungeon of Death. Featured portions were: an actual execution, an electric chair, a corpse burning at the stake, and an elaborate entrance through a swamp with a bridge. What fun was had in 2005!

2006's haunt theme was the Curse of the Pirate. And what excellent timing on the Tustin Haunt's part. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 had just come out and the pirate craze was in full swing. This was the first year that the haunt was open for 2 nights, both new ideas proved to be wildly successful. Portions of the haunt included a Tavern, Wharf, Moored Pirate Ship, Cursed Jungle, and Treasure Cave with Spiders and of course - TREASURE! Check out Photos at the Tustin Haunt photobucket account: TUSTIN HAUNT

2007 was amazing! The Carnival of Dreams brought nightmares to all who managed to survive the entire experience. An 18' tall clown face welcomed guests when they entered the the Pre-Show area. As the Pre-Show progressed, the the giant clown face turned evil and the condemned carnival opened its gates for a final romp through a Glow Funhouse, a Clown Campground, a rotating tunnel, sideshow alley and then through the Big Top where YOU were the main course *cough* ...attraction.
Over the 3 nights of operation, the Tustin Haunt had almost 2,800 people go through - as verified by a ticket count. For all the hard work, the haunt received just under $800 in donations, which would sound like a large amount except when you take into account the $2,500 that was invested into it for 2007.
Some of the effects and technology used were invisible UV paint, fluorescent paint, pneumatic electronically controlled props, 4300 watts of audio power, 5450 watts of incandescent light fixtures, 3200 watts of fog machines, a DMX 512 controller utilizing a single universe of DMX control, an 800 watt DMX Strobe light, two 250 watt UV fixtures, six UV fluorescent tubes, over 1000' of cable, lots of wood, paint, screws, staples, plastic, sweat and a crew of 12 dedicated individuals.

The Red Hill Mining Town of the late 1800's rises from history in 2008. The Red Hill Mining Town is a piece of Tustin History that has been long forgotten due to the dark events that transpired as a result of the Red Hill Mine. The 2008 Tustin Haunt will focus around these events. The Tustin Haunt plans on recreating the old Red Hill Mining Town along with a graveyard, Red Hill Quicksilver Mine, and numerous props and effects that will delight and scare our guests. As always, it will be a visually stunning experience. Also, it is FREE! though we do suggest a donation of $2 per person.
